About the event

This talk explores the Bodleian’s collection of Transparencies: coloured prints with some parts varnished on the reverse to render them transparent. The prints were lit from behind with an oil lamp or candle and placed in a window.

Transparencies were a phenomenon in the early nineteenth century in both high art and popular culture, featuring in domestic settings and inspiring romantic painters such as Caspar David Friedrich and Samuel Palmer to experiment with reverse-lit pictures.

Following the talk, enjoy these rare and beautiful images on display at the Weston Library.

 Speaker

Professor Peter Davidson is Senior Research Fellow in Renaissance and Baroque Studies at Campion Hall, University of Oxford.
