About the event

Wood type has a history as long as printing itself. Thomas Gravemaker, Printer in Residence at the Bodleian Bibliographical Press during March 2023, tells the story of the materials, manufacture and use of wood type since the nineteenth century and brings this up to date with an account of his own recent manufacture using digital design and a CNC router.

Before and after the lecture, there will be a display in Blackwell Hall of some examples of wood type available for use at the Bibliographical Press.

 Speaker

Thomas Gravemaker has worked for many years in publishing in the UK – at the Bodley Head and as a senior designer at Thames & Hudson – and in France, first as a studio manager in a design group, before setting up his own studio, LetterpressAmsterdam.
