About the event

Discover the remarkable story of wildlife artist Ferdinand Bauer and the exquisite illustrations of birds he made from a pioneering trip to southeast Europe at the close of the 18th century –  all but a few of which have now just been published for the first time ever in Jonathan’s latest book.

Ferdinand Bauer’s Remarkable Birds is available to buy at this event, when the author will be signing copies, and from the Bodleian Shop.

 Speaker

Jonathan Elphick’s many books include an award-winning field guide to the birds of Britain and Ireland, The Birdwatcher’s Handbook (BBC Worldwide, 2001); The National Parks and other wild places of Britain & Ireland (New Holland, 2002); Great Birds of Britain & Europe (Duncan Baird, 2008); the bestseller Birdsong (Quadrille, 2012); and several major titles for the Natural History Museum: The World of Birds is a detailed account of bird biology and a survey of every bird family in the world.

He is currently working on another book on bird art for Bodleian Library Publishing, Ferdinand Bauer's Remarkable Birds (due to be published June 2024); and a memoir of his early days growing up as a naturalist in North Wales, interweaving lyrical descriptions of landscape, wildlife, history and literature.

Jonathan spent 15 years as Specialist Researcher for both Birds Britannica by Mark Cocker (Chatto & Windus, 2005) and Birds & People by Mark Cocker and David Tipling (Random House, 2013), respectively the largest surveys of cultural attitudes to birds in Britain & Ireland, and worldwide.
