About the event

The Herculaneum papyri have fascinated scholars and kings since their discovery in the mid-18th century. The Bodleian houses several, the fruit of diplomatic relations with the kingdoms of Naples and the (possibly mythical) trade of illegible, brittle papyri for kangaroos. Though many papyri were physically opened in the past, the several hundred papyrus rolls that remain rolled up are only now beginning to yield their secrets.

In this talk, Michael McOsker will explain the latest results, including the recently revealed Stoic text of Pherc 1667 and Philodemus' On Vices 1 in Pherc 172 (in the Bodleian).

Speaker

Dr Michael McOsker is a Researcher in Herculaneum Papyrology at the University of Oxford.
