About the event

Birds in a Cage is the true story of a group of British prisoners of war in 1940s Germany who overcome hunger, hardship, fear, and stultifying boredom through their shared love of birds. Their experiences leave them scarred, but set them on a path to becoming pioneers of the post-war nature conservation movement. Several bequeathed their personal archives from the war to Oxford University, including John Buxton, who later became a lecturer in English

After the talk, Derek will be signing and selling copies of Birds in a Cage in Blackwell Hall from 14.00 – 14.30.

Speaker

Derek Niemann is a freelance writer, author and creative writing tutor for Cambridge University who spent 25 years working for the RSPB and has been a country diary columnist for the Guardian since 2003.
