Looking for Alice
10.45–11.25am
A Lewis Carroll Society discussion
Lewis Carroll Society trustee Mark Davies will chat to the artist Caroline Ritson. Caroline painted the ‘Looking for Alice’ Sobell House Hospice Ox which the society bought and gifted to the city last year. Mark’s quest will be to discover her motivation and inspirations, and yours will be the adventure of looking for ‘Looking for Alice’ in Oxford’s Westgate Shopping Centre later today!
Pictures and Conversations: exploring the Jon A. Lindseth Lewis Carroll Collection at Christ Church
11.30am–12.10pm
A Lewis Carroll Society lecture
William Hale, Senior Rare Books Librarian, and Tom Duckham, Charles Dodgson Project Archivist, will discuss the acquisition and contents of the Jon A. Lindseth Lewis Carroll Collection which was donated to Christ Church last year.
It includes manuscripts, letters, rare editions, and photographs, and provides a unique way to explore Carroll’s life, work, impact, and enduring legacy.
Alice and the Gramophone Discovery
12.15–12.55pm
A Lewis Carroll Society lecture
Join Joe Cheal on a multilayer quest to explore the writing style of Lewis Carroll’s dreamy Wonderland books. Joe is the author of 'Alice and the Gramophone Discovery', a new adventure in which Alice playfully finds herself in a strange, and yet familiar, world. He will be drawing on Carroll’s stories to describe his own quest to produce an original escapade for an adventurous Alice.
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass
2–3pm
Peter Hunt, author of Alice’s Oxford People and Places in conversation with Samual Fanous, Bodleian Library Publishing
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass are known and loved the world over. But how many readers appreciate that their roots are firmly in the nineteenth century and the university city of Oxford?
Oxford’s streets, colleges and buildings, the River Thames, and the villages on its banks, are imbued with literally hundreds of intricate connections to the books, from the hatters on the High Street to the dodo in the Museum of Natural History.
Join Peter Hunt, author of Alice’s Oxford People and Places that Inspired Wonderland, in conversation with Samuel Fanous (Head of Bodleian Library Publishing), as they explore the compelling connections between the world of Charles Dodgson and two of the most famous fantasies in literature.
