About the event

Join us for an opportunity to view some of the rare or unique early manuscript and printed editions of 易經 (Yijing, 'Book of Change'), or commentaries, from the Bodleian Libraries’ Chinese collection. They include copies of the Yijing from Ming and Qing imperial editions, early manuscripts, as well as commercially produced copies from the 15th and 16th centuries.

Dr Mamtimyn Sunuodula will introduce the manuscripts and the books at a ‘Show and Tell’ session (bookable). Professor John Lai will then give a live demonstration of divination method using the principles of Yijing.

About the Yijing

易經 (Yijing, or the Book of Changes), venerated as the 'classic of classics' of ancient China, has far-reaching impact on Chinese religion, philosophy, and politics. Its cultural influence extends to the other parts of East Asia and beyond. Its profound influence is still very much visible and resonating today across many different societies and cultures and lives as daily practice. One of the most enduring and visible influences of the Yijing manifests itself in the application of its principles of Yin and Yang and sixty-four hexagrams in the divination practices and understanding of everyday human social life.
