About this course
This course is designed to teach skills to make an illustrated book: typesetting, linocut printmaking, Risograph and book-binding.
Over eight sessions you will design your own book and both learn and apply these skills, ending up with your own illustrated, printed and bound book.
On the course you will learn:
- how to design a book
- illustration approaches and planning
- linocut print preparation
- printing on a Risograph machine
- case binding and Japanese stab binding
As well as learning these skills in the workshop space inside the library, you will be supported in learning from the collections in the Bodleian Library, including the collection of artist’s books. At a planning session in the Weston Library, you will discuss and explore your approach to making a book, while viewing historic and contemporary examples from the collections.
At the end of the course you will have made one hand-bound copy and a couple of soft-bound copies. We will provide all materials, but you do need to come with an idea for your book.
