The wide range of rock types used for gravestones means that cemeteries can be geological treasure-troves – and Oxford cemeteries are great places to see them. To find out why, join geologists Nina Morgan and Philip Powell for a guided gravestone geology walk in Holywell Cemetery. You'll never look at cemeteries in the same way again!

Event details

There will be two seperate tours on Friday 10 September 2021:

  • Tour 1: 11am–12.05pm
  • Tour 2: 2.30–3.35pm

Meet in front of the Geology of Oxford Gravestones exhibit in the Weston Library for a short introduction.

Holywell Cemetery is an easy 15 minute stroll away on paved footpaths, but the surfaces in the cemetery are uneven, so wear comfortable walking shoes or boots and wet weather gear.

Unfortunately there is no wheelchair access in the cemetery.
