About the event

Enjoy a unique Valentine's tour of the buildings that make up the original Bodleian Library. Join the Friends of the Bodleian team to see these incredible spaces and hear the stories behind them.

The tour will include the Divinity School, Duke Humfrey’s Library, Convocation House and Chancellor’s Court. Our team will share the history of how and why the buildings came to be, the stories behind the spaces. This unusual and unique tour shares the history of Thomas James, appointed by Sir Thomas Bodley as the first librarian. Forbidden to marry in the role, Thomas James nevertheless followed his heart and defied convention. A true tale of love for this Valentine’s Tour.
